Description

The Madara Rider or Madara Horseman is an early medieval rock relief carved of a full size horseman on the Madara Plateau east of Shumen in northeastern Bulgaria, near the village of Madara. The monument is dated in the very late 7th, or more often very early 8th century, during the reign of Bulgar Khan Tervel. The site was discovered in 1872 and is the only one of its kind in Europa. The inscription next to the Horseman dates from 705. Next to the site is the Madara Fortres and caves. The site is listed as Word Heritage.

Varna, the largest city on Bulgarian coast

Varna is a major port city and seaside resort on Bulgaria’s Black Sea, next to the famous coastal resorts of Golden Sands. Popular with the young travelers do to abundance on beach clubs and night life.

The ancient city of Nesebar

Nessebar is a small town in Burgas Province, on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast about half way between Varna and Burgas.

The cobbled streets of the old town, which sits on a promontory, are lined with stone and wood traditional houses and antiqe ruins such as Byzantine-era fortifications and baths. Most of the houses are souvenir shops or restaurants with beautiful black sea views.

The archeological sites are all over next to ruins of the 5th-century Church of St. Sofia that include stone columns and large arched windows and the 11th-century Church of St. Stephen that houses mural paintings and richly decorated orthodox altarpiece.

Sozopol, Bulgaria

Sozopol, is an ancient seaside town located 35 km south of Burgas on the southern Bulgarian Black Sea Coast very close to Turkeys border. Today it is one of the major seaside resorts in the country, known for the Apollonia art and film festival that takes place in September.

Built on a small peninsula the old part of town is a beautiful place to enjoy a taverna and try the Bulgarian food.

Nearby beautiful beaches and small beach hotels if you want to enjoy the Black Sea.

Sanahin and Haghpat, Armenia

Sanahin is one of the most important historic sites in Armania, its name literally translates from Armenian as “this one is older than that one”, presumably representing a claim to having an older monastery than the neighbouring Haghpat Monastery. The two villages Sanahin and Haghpat and their monasteries are similar in many ways, and lie in plain view of each other on a dissected plateau formation, separated by a canion formed by a small river flowing into the Debed river. The 10th century monasteries are included in the UNESCO World Heritage

Description

Haghpat is the village across the canion in the Lori Province of Armenia, located near the city of Alaverdi and the state border with Georgia. It is notable for Haghpat Monastery, a religious complex founded in the 10th century and included in the UNESCO World Heritage List along with monasteries in nearby Sanahin the one above.
