The Madara Rider or Madara Horseman is an early medieval rock relief carved of a full size horseman on the Madara Plateau east of Shumen in northeastern Bulgaria, near the village of Madara. The monument is dated in the very late 7th, or more often very early 8th century, during the reign of Bulgar Khan Tervel. The site was discovered in 1872 and is the only one of its kind in Europa. The inscription next to the Horseman dates from 705. Next to the site is the Madara Fortres and caves. The site is listed as Word Heritage.

Varna, the largest city on Bulgarian coast

Varna is a major port city and seaside resort on Bulgaria’s Black Sea, next to the famous coastal resorts of Golden Sands. Popular with the young travelers do to abundance on beach clubs and night life.

The ancient city of Nesebar

Nessebar is a small town in Burgas Province, on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast about half way between Varna and Burgas.

The cobbled streets of the old town, which sits on a promontory, are lined with stone and wood traditional houses and antiqe ruins such as Byzantine-era fortifications and baths. Most of the houses are souvenir shops or restaurants with beautiful black sea views.

The archeological sites are all over next to ruins of the 5th-century Church of St. Sofia that include stone columns and large arched windows and the 11th-century Church of St. Stephen that houses mural paintings and richly decorated orthodox altarpiece.
